What do chairs do?

In short, chairs stir the discussion and guide the MEPs and Ministers through the debate, ensure everyone gets appropriate speaking time, votes are counted and motions entertained.

The chair is the expert of the procedures in the institutions and the point of contact between participants and the organizing team.

The perfect chair is a good communicator, a true team player, an expert on the rules of procedure and has enough authority to keep control over a room with up to 80 participants.

Chairs work in pairs, together with the whole organizing team, secretaries
and commissioners. As they have a huge responsibility during the
simulation, they should take their job very seriously.

However, chairing is also a very rewarding experience and a big learning opportunity. If you don’t know whether you are quite there, your chairing partner will help you develop throughout the experience and you will not only have fun while chairing, but also find a friend that you know you can rely on in very extraordinary situations.

At MEU Paris, we want to give everyone the same chances when applying as a chair – we therefore have an application procedure. After the application deadline ended, all shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and gender-mixed couples will be created, that complement each other in experience and expertise.

Chairs will be assisted by the chair’s coordinator during the simulation, which will help in understanding the RoP, preparing amendments and support in case of crisis.

As chairs play such an important role, their accommodation, participation
fee and lunches will be covered by the organizing team – your opportunity
to come to Paris for a cheaper price and see the National Assembly of
France from a very special perspective.
